When the leaves begin to turn in the Fall in 2008, I will be sending my third boy to first grade. Full-day, for the first time in our lives.
- Gone will be the long hours of play on the floor with his younger brother as they build their wooden train set.
- Gone will be the mindless conversations between brothers over lunch about which cereal bowl holds the most grains.
- Gone will be the friendly ballad, “You’ve Got A Friend in Me,” while both transform into either Buzz Lightyear or Woody.
- Gone will be cape crusaders quest as they fly up and down the stairs with their utility belt to capture the villainous Joker, Penguin, or Cat Woman, as they speed through the house in their imaginary Bat Mobile.
With Mother’s Day approaching, the boys already have a plan in action. They have the perfect gift in mind for Mom, as she assumes her new role as the primary play mate of the youngest brother. We’ll get her this:
Because, around here, everyday is Mother’s Day.

Where do I get me one of those tight fighting bat suits? I could hold some serious serve on the tennis court with that outfit on. As for your lamenting the milestone that is full-day school, I have one question for you…are you crazy? I was so ecstatic when I finally got the house to myself for a few hours a day. You might think you’ll miss it , all the togetherness, but he’ll be back and bounding around before you can even blow your nose and visit the toilet by yourself. You’ll see.
I think “Hmm” is about all I can say to that. Oh, and I might want to check whether your husband’s been bribing them.
I’d take that bat suit from my kids only if they magically gave me the figure to go with it.
Wow, that would be totally scary to see me in something like that. My kids would be scarred for life.
That is just one of the things I miss about not being a SAHM, watching the little boys play together. By the time I get home, they are fighting for my attention while I am trying to get dinner on the table, some laundry done, and picking up the disastrous house from their day of activity. Another thing I miss is not being able to spend nearly as much time as I would like at school WITH them, in the classroom, helping out, at least so other moms even know who I am. (I’m sure so many wonder where my child’s absentee parent is…*sigh*)
Oh, and about spotting a fake smile…here’s my take on that. Yes, folks do “fake” concern at times..and why do they do it? In my simplistic view of the world, I try to see the best in people and if they at least “fake” concern or a smile or whatever, then if they keep doing it long enough, maybe it will turn genuine….who knows…but we can always hope that….
