This week’s Haiku Friday.

I bought a pie crust
couldn’t find it anywhere
I was bewildered.

Then, I found the shell
where I once found the glitter,
in the laundry room.

So, I teach the kids,
pie always tastes much better
when the shell is filled.

It’s craft time, I say!

This is not enough.

I pull out the stuff;

every Mother’s worst nightmare;

glittery sprinkles.

It’s OK, I think,

We’ll be outside! No messes.

Friends, I am so calm.

What is the big deal

when they cover the driveway

in sprays of sparkle?

My son said it best;

I think our driveway looks cool.

He’s right about this.

But things turn ugly,

“Take these glitter tubes inside!”

The laundry suffers.

Now, I must learn this

one rule about the glitter

It’s ALWAYS a mess.

No way to make it,

on time, to school everyday.

See, we have BIG plans.

As caped crusaders,

we’ve got our costumes to wear,

plus, there’s crime to fight.

We’re up at seven,

ready, serious, for play

Still, not enough time.

Tears at 11,

time for lunch,

and real clothes too,

still, play makes us late.

made in 1928
to toast the leap year:

THE LEAP YEAR COCKTAIL

From The Joy of Mixology: The Consummate Guide to the Bartender’s Craft created by Harry Craddock of the Savoy Bar in London created it to celebrate Feb. 29, 1928., also known as Sadie Hawkins Day.

Ingredients:

• 2 ounces gin
• 1/2-ounce Grand Marnier
• 1/4-ounce fresh lemon juice; twist of lemon peel

Instructions:

Shake the gin, Grand Marnier and lemon juice with ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon peel.

Off to run errands

Cold, and trying to hurry

A notice a smell…

Yep, it smells like skunk

glad to be driving away

from this awful smell.

Soon I realized

skunk was everywhere I drove

what would the town do?

I began to look

at the faces of people,

looking for a sign

that they smelled it too.

I said this to the mailman

“Do you smell the skunk?”

As he walked toward me

he said, “Yes, I think I do.”

Skunks had invaded.

I drove further still,

the smell was making me sick

then I had a thought…

Could this smell be us?

A skunk must now be living

high in the garage.

The ammonia worked

before, for the opossum,

to get him to leave.

I feel as if I’m

Dr. Doolittle who talks

to the animals.

But now we are stuck

with a van that smells like skunk

like Pepe Le Pew.

My boys bring me so much joy
Soon, you’ll know it too.

What will it be like?
Four superhero bundles
terrorize my house.

Yet, there are moments,
like when they pick me flowers,
that make my heart melt.

You’d think they don’t care
but, they will be perceptive,
and notice your needs.

They might make you lunch,
like my 3-year-old did once,
when he heard me say,

“There’s no time to cook!”
The peanut-butter sandwich
made sloppy, with love.

There’s just one warning,
I want to pass on to you:
Remember this tip –

Always check the seat
before you sit down to pee;
It’s probably wet.

Can’t find the Ketchup!
Four opened jars of jelly!
Need a bigger fridge.

Then I find this tip

First you sort by type –
Pickles go with sandwich spreads,
Cream goes with Dairy.

Now the kids can find
jam for their peanut butter,
mustard for the ham.

Funerals move too quickly –

they close the casket

before you’re ready

I need — and want — to linger.

That truck with the dirt

shows up as we leave the grave.

He lived a long life

so, you think you won’t be sad.

Death is expected.

Still, a reminder

your place in the universe

has shifted a bit.

Then you see his son…

sitting in that same church pew

where you sat with Dad.

Please spare him this pain…

and then, the tears flow in waves.

You move your gaze,

And see the sibblings

the baby brother is now

left behind, again.

I’m so happy

that I still have someone small

who sits on my lap.

My tears fall on his

little shoulder; can I stop

grief’s sting in his life?

I hug him tighter

then I whisper in his ear

love is forever…

Snicker-doodle cookie
dough pre-made for his birthday,
which chilled on the porch.

I ran out of milk
while making tapioca
A trip to the store.

He used all the milk
when he practiced his pouring…
table smells sour.

No Mylar balloons.
So, the caped crusader screams…
I paid for the milk.

His brothers, they cringed…
it’s so humiliating
everyone else stares.

Ants crawled in the dough
while the dough chilled on the porch.
Ants, you can have it!

Now, it’s 5:30
dinner’s still frozen turkey.
Need pressure cooker.

The tapioca!
Scorched while I tutored and cleaned.
Most of it is fine.

I have much to do
that can’t be done when they’re home.
No time for bon-bons.

Four point five hours
per week is all that I get.
I take a deep breath.

Today I will share
my time to help in his class.
“Stay longer,” he says.

The pressure cooker
full of scorched tapioca –
tons of elbow grease.

Turkey turns out great.
They eat it with raw carrots.
They clear the table.

I still need some peace.
I’m heading to the basement,
and find the laundry.

Whites are clean and bright.
This puts a smile on my face,
As I fold neat stacks.

All week I worked hard.
No time to look at faces.
I hope to catch up.
