Does size matter?
My camera is still broken, and I still haven’t bought my new camera, as there are still pressing questions.
The decision was easy, once I realized I had really fallen in love — and this love is really what drove my desire for a new camera anyway. I’ve fallen in love with a specific lens, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D which goes with the Nikon Camera. So I chose the Nikon D80/18-135 mm lens kit.
Why place so much importance on a lens you ask? Check out Christina’s photos here, or Pioneer Woman’s portrait photo here (It’s the last one with those gorgeous blue eyes.) This left me with no choice — the NikonD80. I forgot to ask Maya which lens she used for these gorgeous pics. Still, I can’t deny that MelodyA always has beautiful pictures on her blog, with gorgeous light, which are taken with her Canon. So, just so you know, it was not an EASY decision by any means. Natalie has the one too, and Janet, really knows how to use her Canon. Yet, Maggie has a Nikon, Painted Maypole just bought hubby a Nikon, Carrie has one too.
Still, I haven’t purchased the camera yet… a friend, experienced with a Nikon camera, brought up a great point. Will I want to carry it with me all the time? Will it be too big?
If you have this camera, do you find yourself reaching for that little point-and-shoot? Would I be happier with something smaller, and portable… like this?
This picture was shot and posted by Cliff Hutson for Amazon.com. You can see more of his photos here.
So, SLR users… does size really matter? Let me know.

Uh, yea. It’s like caring for a third child. But I make the sacrifice most of the time because I like the results. Canon does have a great new ps out now called the G9, though. If I were buying a new ps that’s what would get. And thanks for the mention. That’s one of my favorites.
I don’t have an SLR, I have a point and shoot. But I am dying to get an SLR. And I think, once you fall in love with your SLR and photography, size won’t matter – no matter how bulky it can be sometimes.
I have a very good SLR but find that I carry ones in my purse and end up snapping more. If I take out my SLR, it is because I’m “planning” to go shoot. With the ease of digital, I find the pocket one gets tons of use. The speed of the lense is the most important thing on my small camera. I go for the Canons on the small cameras.
i have had a d80 for over a year now & i love it! i just wrote about it on my blog over the weekend, so check it out if you are interested.
Congrats on somewhat making a selection. You know I have no clue which lens I used on those photos. I’ll have to look when I’m home. I’ve been playing with my mom’s lenses so much that it’s hard for me to keep track.
Can’t wait to see your photos with your new camera!
Thanks for the tip on BioClean, and I’ll CLEARLY need to enter to win those wipes, as well!
And guess what—the Canon 50 mm 1.8 is like buttah, and so is the even better Canon 85 mm 1.8. And both cheaper than the Nikon versions. I’m just saying.
Here are a few recent posts with my canon and canon lenses. I can never pass up a chance to encourage people on the camera I love!
And I don’t even think about missing a ps, unless I’m at the beach, when I take the ps.

it’s hard – finding the perfect camera. i have an olympus evolt e-500 and like most things about it, but there’s always something i wish was a little better/different. and we do have a P&S too which is nice for the times i don’t want to lug the SLR around.
good luck!
I recently got the Nikon D-40 (mainly b/c it was as much as my husband was willing to spend) and I’m still learning how to use it. I think there’s a place for POS and SLRs, but our little POS is broken and I haven’t been able to replace it yet. It’d be great for leaving in the car when you just happen upon a GREAT photo op.
Observing bloggers’ photographs is what prompted me to purchase the camera; the difference in the quality of their shots is amazing.
Now……..if I’d just master Photoshop, lol.
Good luck!
I always have my P&S in my purse, but I use my DSLR ten times more. I’m willing to carry it around because I am so in love with what I can do with it. Every time I leave it at home and think “I’ll just use my P&S for something if I want to take a picture” I end up regretting it.
Congrats on making your decision – I know it’s a hard one to make, and once you do it makes you feel so much better…although not quite as good as when you actually get your hands on the camera!
I just got my Rebel for Christmas and I just love it. Sometimes it is bulky, but the quality makes hauling it around 100% worthwhile.
Love your plate of beans and pasta.
I LOVE my Nikon D70 – I believe it’s the precursor to the D80. I use my kit lens most often. It’s a Nikkor 18-70mm lens. I have a telephoto lens, too, but it rarely comes out of the camera bag. I’d like to invest in more lenses one day, but I’m gonna need a financial backer, first.
Thanks so much for your input… I am used to carrying around a camcorder/camera all-in one — so this probably won’t be that different for me. I’ve never really had a point and shoot.
Maybe I’ll get that cute little Pentax for hubby for Father’s Day…Shhhhh don’t tell!
Friend, friend, friend.
You will NEVER mind carrying your big camera. Never. In fact, when I don’t have it, people often wonder where it is. I even take it to school with me. I put it on my shoulder, then my purse on top of that.
I’ve considered getting a ps, but I just can’t. I love my camera too much.
I can’t wait to see what you do with your Nikon!!
Size does matter sometimes…but I’m lucky enough to have a few cameras to choose from (one was a freebie). But if I was going somewhere (like, say Paris), I’d totally bring my Canon and all the lenses!
First of all, LOL at your boys not going along with mommy’s fun plans. Just like kids, eh!?
Second, big congrats on making your selection! I KNOW you will be happy with that camera – very, very happy! (maybe I’m a little biased…but just a little!). I am so honored that my pictures helped sway you in that direction. Canon makes a spectacular camera, too, (and it also has a kick-ass 50mm) but this just fits ME better.
As for the size issue…I worried about that too. But in the almost-month I’ve had the DSLR, I’ve found it to be much less of a problem than I’d anticiapted. The 50mm is my favorite lens anyway, and it’s tiny…the camera fits in my giant mommy purse.
) With that said, I would like to get a quality *small* PAS for the times when a bulky DSLR just isn’t convenient. But most of the time, it’ll be the D80, baby!
Kids almost never want to do the thing you’re prepared to do… “No, mommy, I want to dig in the dirt/dump all my toys into a big pile/using tracing paper to make a mask” Usually it’s something that you have no supplies for, at least in my experience with the lil ones.
I’m longing for a DSLR, but am realistic that it will be at least a year before I can even start researching. The size/bulk will no doubt be an issue for me, but if I’m going to start taking this photography thing more seriously (and I want to), then I’ll be happy to make that sacrifice. Best of luck on your hunt, though!
I drag my Canon DSLR everywhere.
P.S. I want the new $8,000 Canon.
Just dreaming.
Hey, what a coninky-dink! We just finished gluing old buttons on to construction paper. Awwww….! (Hee, hee)
I would highly recommend the Nikon, too. I’ve also got a cute little Pentax just like that and it takes crappy photos. I wouldn’t recommend it, even though it is nice and little.
Yes, the DSLR is big and bulky, but it is worth it for the pictures you get. You can see a post of mine here where I and others (read the comments) talk about our cameras and lenses.

i think there are uses and times for both kinds of cameras. i wonder if my husband will let me play with his new one or not?
I just have the small camera – but I thought you might find it funny that a friend of mine *just* this week swapped from film to a Nikon D80 – because after she dropped off 5 rolls of film on the first day of her honeymoon her husband put his foot down and his wallet out
