No Matter What, Tell Them It Tastes Great
Now that the boys are home from school, I’m finding myself cooking a lot more. A lot more. I can barely get out of the kitchen.
So far, the boys have turned down every attempt I’ve made at some sort of “field trip.” We have COSI and Zoo Memberships that are not getting used. “Please, we don’t want to go, we just want to stay here, and drive you crazy play.”
With so much time on their hands now, I’ve decided we could focus on some life skills: Cooking. I’m starting to think, long-term, down the road, I could just engineer this whole chef thing so that, with four able-bodied boys around to cook, I could pretty much get myself lots of free time and nights off in the kitchen.
We know that our little boy has already mastered the poached egg; and that is primarily because we spend so much time alone together. I had the time to teach him. My oldest son, however, has not had the benefit of one-on-one time with me, for a decade. Sad, isn’t it?
Today, he cooked for one of the few first times in his life. He made banana bread. At the age of 13, I know he’s a fairly competent reader; but still, he made some errors.
- Forgot to grease the bread loaf pan.
- Melted butter, but completely forgot to add it to the batter. We found the bowl of liquid gold sitting on the counter when the bread came out of the oven.
- Added the eggs last.
These errors are primarily due to lack of experience, and I’m willing to overlook them and forgive them. Just proves, all the more reason why this summer should be focused on improving our cooking skills. My duty, as a Mother, don’t you think?
Without missing a beat, I took the bread out of the oven (20 minutes before the expected time) and I took a knife and started cutting slits through the bread. I poured the melted left-out butter on top, working it into the holes in the bread.
And because I want to be sure he continues his cooking adventures, I told him, “This tastes GREAT!”
And you know what, it truly did. His brothers, even the one who hates bananas, ate it all up.
So, this summer, I’ll be the one taking the summer off in the kitchen. I’m busy working on my own EA Sports Active for the Wii 30-day challenge. And I am not cheating!

I think that I should come live at your house for a while so you can teach ME!!!
Left out the butter – no big deal… I STILL do stuff like that all the time. Last week-end I made ice cream for the first time, forgot to add the cream ~eyes rolling
I made another batch and we’ve been doing taste testing. Turns out, most people like the ice milk better than the ice cream!
