Send her your rooster!!!
In May 2007, Schmutzie put an image of a rooster on her blog, Milkmoney Or Not, Here I Come. That same month, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The rooster is now her symbol of strength. Schmutzie’s readers started sending her more pictures of roosters, and the “mighty, mighty Cockroll was born.”
My Mom collected roosters. I loved visiting her kitchen to see the new rooster she had invariably added to her collection. I like roosters too — but there was this one ceramic cow, in particular that I liked. So my Mom started buying me cows. After she died, I mixed my cows with her roosters. My 11-year-old said — “Look. It’s like your with your Mom — her roosters and your cows.” So, I sent a picture of one of my favorite roosters off to Schmutzie to add to her Cockroll.

My heart aches for Schmutzie. And she needs to be strong. Have you sent her a picture of your rooster yet? Go visit her page, and see all the roosters, sent in a symbolic gesture of strength. It’s quite a site.
The combination of the roosters, and the world-wide support reminds me of the Millenium Quilt my Mom was working on in 1999. Her face beamed when a package of quilt squares arrived from Alaska. Another from New York — and more from Canada. She made friends with many of them, via e-mail and snail mail. She was so happy to see how her passion of quilting could open her up to so many friendships she would never have otherwise. She would have loved to blog –she would have had a very nice quilting blog. How proud she would have been to send Schmutzie a picture of her favorite rooster. And yes, I’m sure, she would have picked out a different one than the one I picked. We were like that.
Do you ever really marvel at how many people you are connected to — just because of the internet? What a gift that is.

Thanks for thinking of me. It warms the cockles, it does.
A word to future cockrollers: my spambox keeps eating cock related e-mails, so if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
I have made quite a few friends through the internet. Thank God for Al Gore.
Thanks for visiting my site.
Okay, I am really trying to keep my 7th grade sense of humor under wraps.
Yes, yesterday I had a table at a health fair and I met two wonderful women, one a 7 year colorectal cancer survivor and the other a 15 year breast cancer survivor. They said the development of the internet since their diagnosis has been wonderful - especially for their spouses. Just so much more support and opportunities for meeting others in the same boat.
I will try to find a worthy rooster.
Talk about a sense of humor — check out the ads over to the right. Cow ringtones? How about cow parade items?!
I will be searching for the perfect rooster today - I haven’t had any luck yet.
Thanks for bringing attention to her cockroll.
See that community you speak of…it’s why I enjoy blog’hoods and other such pleasures, because you never know who you’ll meet and what influence you’ll have on one another’s life. Serendipity..
And for you and your “aimal totem”farm…
Cow - The cow is the nurturing mother goddess who reminds you to be gentle with yourself and to take better care of yourself
Rooster - Rooster crows heralding a new dawn
Does that make sense why you and your mom found these two so attractive?? Just thought I’d give you food for thought…it’s where I went when I read this!
Lil
Thanks Lil — I did not know. Nice to know — and think of in that way. One more point for the power of the blog.
Thanks for sending this along, SusieJ. I’ll send my cock over there right now (ahem). I’ll also list her on my link love. I appreciate the heads up!
[...] SusieJ posted about a blog called Milkmoney or Not, Here I Come. The author, Schmutzie, is a strong and humorous woman who was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had published an image of a rooster on her site, and her readers began sending her images of roosters to symbolize strength. As she says, “the mighty, mighty Cockroll was born.” Send her a picture of a rooster, your url, and words of support. Just click the image and do it. Then, it wouldn’t hurt any of us to donate to a cancer charity. I can give up a week of coffee to donate for the cure. How about you? [...]
