The Winner and the Answers: 13 Diner Food Code Names
According to The Wall Street Journal (May 4, 2007), Starbucks‘, the Seattle coffee chain, pressured by complaints from customers and investors, has reversed its decision and will sign a licensing agreement with Ethiopia for its regional coffee names.
Why is this important? Well, it should help the small Ethiopian fine-coffee farmers and traders secure a bit more money, and create a better future for their lives. Also, because Gift of Green, who is trying to live an environmentally conscious life, (but does take long showers) has won the Thursday 13 Diner Code Contest. Her prize, a $10 gift card from Starbucks‘. (Send me your address, Gift of Green and I’ll send this card right out to you.)
No, she did not get them all correct — in fact no one did. But Gift of Green gave it a very good shot. (Well, Shelly did, in less than ten minutes — but she thought it was only fair to rescind her answers, and give everyone else a chance. She’s a very, very good person.) This Starbucks‘ Card could have very easily been yours — it was a very easy google search to find the answers. Plus, read this book Frank and Ernest to your kids. Very funny book — and this is where I learned all of them. And, again, it is so important to teach your children a second language before the age of 3. Need I say more?
And, here are your answers.
- On the hoof — Any kind of meat cooked rare
- Bloodhounds in the Hay — Hot dogs and Sauerkraut
- Foreign Entanglements — Plate of Spaghetti
- Hockey puck — A hamburger, well done
- Zeppelin — Sausage
- Chewed with Fine Breath – Hamburger with onions
- Shake one in the hay — Strawberry milkshake
- Bailed hay — Shredded Wheat
- Gravel train — Sugar bowl
- Bubble Dancer — Dishwasher
- Frog sticks — frenchfries

- Maiden’s delight — Cherries, well, you know that one.
So, have some fun at dinner tonight. This could add a whole new dimension to fussy eaters.

Those kinds of twisted menus are fun to do. I’ve seen them where the utensils are coded too.
I saw the quiz the other day but I had no idea what any of them were! Now I know! Hmm… I think I’ll try some foriegn entanglements tonight with some bubble dancing after my shake one in the hay!
Great post- and Happy Mother’s Day to you, Susie!
That really WAS a fun post, Miss SusieJ. I was embarrassed that it brought out the “competitive” in me and made me dash to beat everybody, because that would have defeated the whole purpose. Congratulations to Gift of Green! I can’t believe that no one else even tried.
I am so honored!! Thank you so much, SusieJ, for hosting such a fun contest. Now if I can just remember to bring my own mug to Starbucks…
Signed,
