Oh this was a lovely post! You get my Flaming Sword Award for assertive parenting. I can't tell you the number of times I've MADE my girl do something to be thanked afterwards! Damn shame about the 'lost steps'.....perhaps they could improvise? Hahahaha

I remember secretly loving learning those dances, although it was pretty scary waiting to find out which boy I'd be paired up with each day.

This made me laugh! How lucky we are if our parenting worries are about wearing glasses (mine) and missing dance steps (yours). No matter what, it can't be worse than high school dances in the 80's. Were there even steps?!

One of my husband's and my favorite thing to watch on TV is our local high school's Country Dance contest. It's broadcast on public access fairly frequently. All the kids participate. They learn the steps and then have a dance-off. We don't know any of the high schoolers but it's still fun to watch. It feels like a fun part of living in the South.

I remember my days of junior high dance class in MN. It was part of phys ed and was a 2 week long unit. We learned square dancing, how to waltz, maybe the Polka, I'm pretty sure we learned the Shottisch (sorry, spelling!), and the Hustle. Although I remember the Hustle was on it's way out at the time. Country Line dancing was not big yet. I remember wondering where we were going to use this stuff. Although the Polka is popular at wedding dances; sandwiched between the first dances and the pop music, so the old folks can get a few in before going home.
