Hunger Is A Distraction

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

No. I don’t insist my kids eat breakfast in the morning. More accurately, I didn’t – past tense. Just for the sake of having stress-free mornings, and getting everyone to school on time, I didn’t push breakfast on the little bellies in my kitchen that just weren’t used to the new morning wake-up time. They weren’t awake enough to even know if they were hungry or not.

Or so I thought.

Besides, I figured, the boy’s teachers provided a daylong snack of pretzels or goldfish – so if they did realize they were hungry before lunch, they could nibble on some carbs.

Yes… the peace in the morning was incredible. The two older boys fixed their own cereal, while the little boys were content to skip their breakfast, simply getting on with the business of brushing their teeth, getting their shoes on and heading out the door.

This idyllic morning routine changed the minute I started researching my post on the benefits of cold cereal. From the Kellogg’s website I learned how valuable those fortified cereals really are in getting nutrients in kids who probably could not find them in any other foods, in that quantity, throughout the day.

The Kellogg’s site also reminded me of some key facts that I had completely forgotten – overlooked. Breakfast helps you think fast. Kellogg’s refers to breakfast as a time to “break the fast” of 8 to 12 hours without eating. Of course the body and brain need to re-fuel.

Hunger is a distraction. And that’s no way to start a school day.

So, now, I insist… on something – and they are now eating a small bowl of cold cereal before they brush their teeth. I got a bit of resistance at first — but nothing earth shattering. And now, it’s just part of their routine.

  8. I prepare possible part of breakfast in the evening and in the morning I just reheat it.

  9. I am the early bird. So it is kind of naturally for me to prepare food for the whole family in the morning.

  10. I am a morning person so I am up before anyone else and have my bowl of cereal in peace and quiet. I can look forward to each new day and the joys and challenges it will bring. I always had time to fix breakfast as my children grew up

  11. My kids love their yogurt in the morning, and they can grab them by themselves, so it makes it really easy and relatively healthy!

  12. My daughter is grown now, but when she was young I made sure she ate SOMETHING before school – even if she ate it in the car on the way!

  14. I always make sure my daughter has something for breakfast, because it gives her some fuel to get her started, and it gives us a few minutes together to chat before school! I also make sure the last thing she hears before she leaves for the bus is I love you!

  17. They definately eat something… usually quick like cereal or waffles.

  18. We have to have breakfast in the morning. The kids are starving.

  25. Most of the time, my 5 year old daughter is the first to wake up, so she helps herself to yogurt or a banana, and when my husband wakes up (I’m usually the last out of bed, NOT a morning person!!) he makes her a small bowl of cereal to make sure she gets enough fiber to fill her up until lunch.

  26. I like to start my morning off with fruit, cereal and cottage cheese, then it’s off to the gym for me!

  27. We’re smoothies and toast people with flat eggs or pancakes when I have extra time.

  28. I don’t have kids, but breakfast is important for everyone.

  29. My daughter has pre-breakfast (a glass of milk) as she’s waking up and cereal, pancakes, or eggs for the real meal sitting at the table. She likes to linger as she eats. I’m not sure what our routine will be when school starts next year!

  30. It’s very important for kids to eat breakfast. Not only does breakfast fuel your body for the day, but it also wakes your body up! It jump-starts your metabolism which is a great tool for avoiding obesity. It also jump-starts your brain, making it easier to focus and think. I bet it even jump-starts your positive attitude!

  31. We definitely make time for breakfast. We make sure to leave at least 20 minutes to be able to grab a bowl of cereal or some toast.

  32. It is just mandatory, like brushing teeth and getting dressed :)

  33. Every morning, we sit down and eat breakfast at least an hour before we need to leave the house. Afterwards, I get the childen dressed and then myself. There is no option to miss breakfast; it’s built into our routine. It’s a routime that works for all of us!.

  34. I thin it’s important that the kids have breakfast and they enjoy it, so it’s not too bad. They have certain things that they like a lot and I try to let them have some choices. Cereal, bagels, waffles and oatmeal are usually bit hits!

  36. Yep, I’m the mean mommy that makes my kids eat breakfast, even when they are not hungry, hehehe. I think breakfast is important, although I don’t make it super healthy or anything. It’s usually cereal, poptarts, or Nutrigrain bars on school days with a glass of milk. I insist on it, because I know they will be hungry soon, and they need to have something in their tummy to concentrate better at school. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day ya know! My kids are still young right now, so I’m sure they will get to a point when they won’t eat when I tell them to, but for right now, I take full advantage of it!

  37. I think breakfast is important for the kids. They don’t have much time in the mornings so we keep on the go breakfast items in the house like granola bars, pop tarts, etc.

  38. My kids are hungry in the mornings so they eat breakfast without any problems are we get up early so we have plenty of time to eat.

  39. Fortunately, my baby is 10 months old. He doesn’t get the choice!

  40. i try to make sure they’ll enjoy eating whatever we offer for breakfast, though i usually let my husband handle the mornings

  41. My baby is 8 months old and he has breakfast everyday. He is now eating finger foods so eating one egg takes about 45 minutes. He makes me slow down. He forces me to enjoy the small things. He goes at his own pace and I follow behind. I love it. He is the greatest blessing I could ever with for.

  44. THEY MAKE THEIR OWN BREAKFAST AND IT’S ALWAYS COCO PUFFS LOL kytah00@yahoo.com

  46. We definitely have time for breakfast or at least make time. It is one of those things that I can’t do without. I always make sure my son has something to start his day. Yogurt, cereal, fruit, etc. The thought of him having to wait for lunch to eat if he missed breakfast would not be good.

  47. When my step-daughter was school aged I always made sure she did not leave the house without eating something. She was not a big breakfast eater but she did like toster strudles or peanutbutter on toast.

  51. Breakfast is vital and so important, we always have breakfast even if we’re in a hurry! You can always grab a piece f fruit or a cereal bar.

  52. No kids, but, when I was a kid. There was always a healthy breakfast on the table and encouragement from my mom.

  53. I always make sure to have breakfast. My nieces always go to bed early so that they can wake up at a reasonable hour and start the day off with a healthy and satisfying breakfast. Breakfast on the go is just not as great. Cereal, oatmeal, fruit are always good options! :)

  54. Even though most mornings I skip breakfast…I make sure my daughter eats before she leaves the house. It’s my one pet-peeve, her not eating. I feel like the world’s worst mommy if she doesn’t have something to eat before she goes to school.

  55. Breakfast is always the most important thing first thing in the morning. I really believe it gets the kids off to a great start.

  57. I have my son pick out the cereals he wants when we go grocery shopping and that way he wants to eat breakfast!

  58. We all sit down together for breakfast and make sure we’re up early enough to not be rushed.

  59. My son is 2 so all I really have to do is put food down in front of him and he will eat!

    Thanks!

  60. I will often freeze batches of breakfast so that we can reheat them later in the week if they needed to sleep in a bit longer.

  61. It’s just not negotiable, so he doesn’t even try. It’s always been this way so he knows it just it what it is. Breakfast at the table, every morning. It’s the gas our bodies need.

  62. I give my kids what they want for breakfast, so that I know they’ll eat it. My son has Pop Tarts, Instant Breakfast, 2 strips of bacon, AND a glass of milk so he can make it through until lunchtime – LOL. My daughter brings a bagel to school and eats it during class when nobody is looking. Forcing kids to eat what they don’t want is just going to make for hassles, and it’s hard enough just getting up in the morning without having to fight, too.

  63. i make sure my kids have breakfast–they like cereal and it keeps them full till lunchtime :)
