When the boy won’t wear his shoes

I have been to the shoe store 4 times since school started. I’m trying to buy a pair of shoes for my 5-year-old. Dad took him the first time; he came home with a pair of shoes that were so big, I thought
they were man shoes. I held his new shoes up to his old shoes to compare for size, and I was mortified; how could that poor little boy walk around in those shoes that were way too small all this time?

Upon closer inspection, I realized that the new shoes were indeed, two sizes too big. When questioned, Dad simply said, “These were the only shoes that didn’t feel too tight.”

I took the shoes back the next day; intending to find a pair that fit properly. After opening up every box of shoes on the wall, and struggling to get his foot inside; we finally settled on a pair. He wore them one day; and the next day declared they were “too tight.”

Without going into the long gory details, this continued to happen four more times; over different days, each with a different pair of shoes. The problem, of course, was too much time spent barefoot at the lake. The boy can’t wear shoes. Finally, I just asked for my money back and decided to wait it out. Soon, it will be cold, I think, and he’ll have to have something on his feet. I won’t even mention the looks and complaints from the sales clerk; but the shoes were not worn outside, so, technically, we earned a refund.

So, with preschool looming 3 mornings a week, we’re forced to do what all the other little preschool boys do; wear their cowboy boots.
On the wrong feet, of course.
