My son has a “frienemy” like that. I’ve gone the lecture route of “if he’s not nice to you, he’s not your friend. Stop hanging out with him.” But Seth still hangs out with this kid. Sounds like this is a gret book and I need to check it out.

I am truly torn on this. While I agree that children need to be guided through to making their own discoveries and solving their own problems, I am left wondering about Calvin. Does Calvin’s parents know that he is a bully? Calvin needs someone to help him discover his strengths so he can stop preying on others.

I have to say I’m a little torn. I understand the rationale for letting kids work these things out and come to discover their own strengths, and I agree with that, but… does Calvin’s parents know he’s a bully? Who is helping Calvin discover his strengths?

I think you got the balance right, actually. He’ll do it completely for himself next time around (pity how we can guarantee that there’ll be a next time). Am equally dreading my little ones first encounters with all this.

It is really hard for me to not “talk” my kids to death and let them discover things on their own. I think I need to start practicing before they start school!

I’ll have to check out this book. It is so hard to not intervene, especially when my daughter has had ‘best friends’ with black hearts.

I think you did a good job, spurring on conversation. All these skills take practice and lord knows, our kids will give us more opportunities to try again.

And hats off to your son; I have Calvins in my life and at 37, I still struggle with setting boundaries. Tough stuff. Glad he was able to eat with his buddies again.
