Twelve reasons why I’m writing a novel in 30 days , via NaNoWriMo.
- To respect authors of other books; especially the writers of books that compel me to say, “I could have written that.”
- To remember what I’ve forgotten: writing cures amnesia.
- Cures procrastination. I find myself willing to do anything, including “clean out the attic,” to avoid sitting in that chair for one more minute.
- Because it’s so nuts that I might actually have something here.
- Falling behind speaks to my “inner rebel” and keeps me from doing other destructive things.
- Because a year is too long to go through this. Thirty days is manageable agony.
- Helps keep weight down. I don’t like to type with chocolate or potato chip grease on my fingers.
- Because it gives me something entirely different and new to think about.
- To say, “yeah, I did that.”
- I have excuses now for saying “No.”
- Writing for long stretches of time brings up ideas I had never thought of before. (See number 3.)
- You should try this: I’m sure you’ll discover, to your complete and utter surprise, that you have something to say that completely knocks your own socks off. And the world needs to hear it!
